Madeira- Experiences in Nature
One of Madeira's greatest tourist attractions is its luxuriant and varied vegetation, which combines tropical and Mediterranean characteristics, giving rise to a diverse plant mosaic rich in shades of green, shapes and sizes.
With the aim of safeguarding this vast natural heritage, which is a rarity worldwide, the Madeira Nature Park was created in 1982. This park is classified as a Biogenetic Reserve, where we can find unique flora and fauna with some rare specimens, such as the Serra Orchid, unique in the world, as well as large trees belonging to the laurel family - the tilde, laurel or vines - and shrubs, ferns, mosses, lichens and other small plants characteristic of the laurel forest.
The peculiar orography of this archipelago, combined with the diversity of terrain and rich landscape, makes it possible to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities. Whether on land, at sea or in the air, there are many options for any nature lover.
Discover them all.
WALKING TOURS
The network of water channels, built by man since the beginning of Madeira's settlement, runs through the beautiful Laurissilva Forest, classified as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO. Created to take water from the mountains to the sugar cane plantations and the people, these irrigation channels, better known as levadas, are accompanied by trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty that invite you to stroll through fantastic scenery. Without the water channels nearby, the paths also offer the pleasure of travelling through Madeira's natural landscape.
