Whales and dolphins can be seen in the archipelago of Madeira at any time of the year.
Thanks to its excellent location in the Atlantic Ocean, whales and dolphins can be seen in the archipelago of Madeira at all year round. Watch at first hand some of the 28 species of dolphins and whales that live in or visit the waters off the coast of the archipelago, relax and enjoy your day at sea, in the middle of the ocean. How about a trip between Madeira and Porto Santo? And maybe even as far as the Desertas islands? In this corner of the Atlantic there is literally an ocean of opportunities to choose from and explore and we can frequently observe common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truincatus), sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and Bryde’s whales (Balaenoptera edeni). From the turtle family, loggerheads (Caretta caretta) are most commonly sighted.
On a boat trip to the island of Porto Santo, you will discover its abundant and varied marine fauna and admire the views of the beautiful coast of the island and its islets. On a magnificent trip to the Desertas islands, you will encounter the last Atlantic refuge of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), the rarest seal in the world, dolphins, turtles and whales. In addition, you can also observe an endangered bird species - Fea´s petrels (Pterodroma feae).
